Now that leaves will soon begin to fall, in the upcoming days when our nudity will be covered with clothes, we are going to replace our canvas totes with leather satchels, light shoes with those made of heavier material and all those tiny high-waisted shorts with trousers. This transition from our ice-cream-looking clothes to those serious autumnal pieces can be horrible and frustrating sometimes. 

Girls that wear dresses eventually have to put on the trousers from time to time, but just for a while we are going to put all those plaid and denim trousers in delay. The reason for that is this check dress in popular Angel cut coming from lovely The Whitepepper, which is perfect for beginning of our school days. Wearing this preppy check-patterned fabric we will be taken seriously in a cool way, while smock shape and purple checks will work for our charm and loveliness.
At the end, after our serious hours, we all end up on Francoise Hardy and sweet delights.

Summary of London Fashion Week AW 2013

Over the last few years we have seen a rise of London as a capital of fashion. Brilliant designers, enormous number of young talent and recent graduates from prestigious fashion schools really bring fireworks of excitement during London Fashion Week. It seems that, the London’s talented fashion kids really set up the new direction in design, whether they are trying to break the boundaries with the new shapes and the design or to connect contemporary with vast history of costume we have in our heritage. Without sounding pretentious, London can really state it has it’s own new wave. Creating summary of London Fashion Week using blogger layout is really hard, because you could really publish a book every season. No matter how you try, you will hardly find even one show that is not good. 

Just look at the AW 2013 show of the “youngest”, the Central Saint Martins MA Fashion graduates. They are all brilliant and have their own fresh design and fashion ideas. This year, I found designs of Jaimee McKenna most interesting. Jaimee, knitwear designer and ex freelancer for Mark Fast, played with pleats in attractive forms using monochrome blue dress as a base. Designer’s powerful blue felt like The Blue Epoch of Yves Klien walking on the catwalk. 

Simone Rocha is one more young designer that has proved the status she earned last season with her eponymous label. The fact that she is coming from the family of designer (John Rocha) she takes to try harder. Simone Rocha’s AW 2013 show entitled Respect Your Elders had the task to respect the cut and refined details of clothes. Her connection of unconnected things, also demonstrated she did that pretty well. Risky combinations of heavily embroidered lace, faux fur, pink, leopard pattern can be dangerous for many designers. But not for Simone. Like an experienced designer, she created balance between that teenage edgy vibe and ladylike outline and created the minimalistic outcome. Accessories as loafers in velvet, patent, leopard or glitter, quirky glasses and refined headdresses were topping on the Simone Rocha’s excellent cake. 

Last season, except Simone Rocha, I fell in love with Eudon Choi’s work. The AW 2013 collection from Eudon Choi, which was inspired by Russian women who kept their families together during the Russian revolution, turned me into a big fan. Designer that is initially trained as a menswear designer has an excellent sense for romantic but still powerful womenswear. This nostalgic trip to Russia, brought also amazing collaboration with milliner Piers Atkinson, that created amazing headwear; bloom-filled scarves. 

One more successful attempt of subtle romance was Giles show. It was enough creepy for Addams family and enough romantic for medieval princess. Dramatic huge locks in combination with long shiny and silky dresses with bishop sleeves, created beautiful catwalk story. The kings of creating stories on catwalk, Meadham Kirchhoff duo, showed once again there are two meanings of the word kitschy. Their kitschy is the other one, a good word. In their magical Helter Skelter they connected almost everything; Harlequins, Rococo, Mary Poppins, Goth princesses, Louis IV and Victorian maids. And what can we say except admire them and history we have. 

More Moment to remember: Burberry hearts, Ashley Williams collection as part of Fashion East, John Rocha’s blossoms, Emilia Wickstead’s tartan ensembles.

When I saw this morning the post on amazing Drifter & the Gypsy featuring one of the past collections of Sally Scott, I was wondering how come I've never heard of it and I just had to found out who is this Sally Scott. I was assured it’s some new French label, but Sally Scott is label of Japanese clothing and textile designer Akira Minagawa who is well known for his clothing line Mina Perhonen. Sally is imaginary girl dressed up in perfect charming layered ensembles that are influenced by Nouvelle Vague. Except pieces look extremely well tailored, what made me to fall in love with Sally Scott are all the pretty prints and patterns that Minagawa is designing himself. And when the words of portrayal are chic librarians, 1960s new wave and romantic countryside girls, we are ready to fly to another continent.

The Magnificent World of TT

The story of TT label begins in 2010, unintentionally, like the most fascinating stories usually do start. When in one gloomy December day, designer Tanja Topolovec sent one of her designs to competition held by one Croatian online magazine, she didn’t expect that it would cause such a sensation like it did or receive great critics. This has urged for creating of her own labour of love, TT, where she could combine her past and current interests in visual art with her vision of fashion. Therefore, TT accessory line is the fusion of different fields where designer is exploring her talents, such as multimedia, sculpture or textile design. As perfectionist, designer’s eternal statement is to demand the multi-purpose of designs, and its different dimensions. So, it’s not just about the garment, hat or necklace and its determined form. The story of TT is the story of experiment atypical from ordinary fashion story that has just interest in wearable. It’s also the story of surprises, since it usually begins on vague mornings on flea markets where designer is wandering for treasure pieces that are enough flawless to turn into fait d’art. It’s the story where additional efforts to supply materials that will fit into philosophy of fair and guilt-free fashion, is far away from burden. It’s the story of uncountable hours spent in applying feathers, furs or embroidering hundreds of beads. It’s the story where magic creates reality from vision.

Oh hello there, 

Could we go out for a walk sometimes? You would hug me tenderly as I walk down the street moving away leaves that come my way. Please, keep me warm and make me chic, so I can look like I stepped out of film from far away land, made by the man…hmm…Godard, that’s his name. I cross my heart and kiss my elbow that I won’t spoil you with the boots, so I will wear my prettiest Mary Janes and finest cream lace on legs when we have date. When we come at home, I promise I will take you off gently and put you on my prettiest satin hanger. I would make myself cup of raspberry tea while you will sleep. I will whisper you softly the words of worship and love, and you will wait patiently for our next adventure and walk.

IN COLLAGE: Peter Jensen velvet collar swing coat from his Autumn Winter 2012 Thelma collection comes in three different versions. The lavender one had been featured in last issue of Lula under Lula Loves. Vivi Ponti from Vivetta last few seasons makes adorable coats with interesting details. The one on the photo (photographed and styled by Linda Portman) was from Vivetta AW 11 collection, while in new collection there is black coat with red fur details. Blue coat with black pockets and buttons is from Orla Kiely Pre-AW12 collection. Of course Alexa has it. **☺

One of our favorite designers, Nadia Izruna, who has shown an exquisite talent in creating of pretty and vintage inspired pieces of clothes over the last years, is one more designer to have Made in Kind collaboration with Anthropologie. What we need for sweet autumn days? 

Tailored pinafore dress that will be our everyday loyal partner. Organza dress with sparkle of gold and white tights for our dancing days. Velvet dress fastened with bow on the waist in moments when we need a breeze of old-school glamour and fitted fox print dress in moments where we are feeling playful, quirky and young. In days like these, we also need good rain coat to lead the battle against harsh wind and umbrella that protects our neat hairs and smart heads from raindrops. 

Made by Orla Kiely, showed "how to wear" in prettiest way by Leith Clark, and old-fashioned romantic atmosphere created through Venetia Scott's lens. Oh, Orla!

After exploring the path of perfect knitted garment, we went through the chapter of cute little things such as bows or thousands of little hearts and dots. We were also examining the shape of pearls, therefore we came to conclusion that beaded knitted cardigans or jumpers are enough playful, but with a serious dose of glamour. On some other days, we were bedazzled with flowers from the wreaths (just remember Givenchy mohair pullover last year and obsessions it caused). After Burberry Prorsum's Autumn / Winter 2012 owl motif jumpers, Indiana Joneses of fashion and their followers came back to thrift shops to locate their hunts. And we love either patterned little creatures or those that come as appliqués. Peter Jensen, besides past sweet animal collaboration with Urban Outfitters, has always been a man that lived where the wild things are. As the before-the-trend-designer, Jensen’s unisex rabbits and foxes are already classical secret of chic couples. This little-creatures-fever offers dozens of ideas for DIYs, so if you are kind of creature that is hobby lover, you can get appliqués in textile stores and stitch them to your plain jumpers. Adorable are those Fifi Lapin appliqués, which are available for just £ 2.99. For edgier state of minds, it would be useful information that JW Anderson did collaboration with Topshop that’s all about bats and ghosts on jumpers. 

And when it comes to novelty sweaters, girl just cannot defend against the charm of Bella Freud’ s quirky graphics and slogans on basic garments. After classic Ginsburg is a God, there is another jumper from Bella’s factory that has a potential to become a star; Jane jumper that celebrates love of Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg. It’s not exactly animal jumper, but romantic love per se could easily fit in the form of our headline; Where the wild things are.

Issue 15 of our dearest Lula Mag is finally out. This time cover girl of my dreams is beautiful Hannah Holman, star of Orla Kiely SS 2013 Lookbook and film. Cover with Hannah, photographed by Damon Heath, comes in three different versions. From scans I collected over the internet, there is also a feature with our new icon Miss Moonrise Kingdom, Suzy Bishop aka Kara Hayward. Also I find very charming Amish-esque angelic looks of Zanna van Vorstenbosch in editorial photographed by Ellen Von Unwerth. What can I say besides I am very impatient to see this magical spreads in my mailbox. What about you?

Flirts in red

Although I was immune for a long time on excitement caused by Lana Del Rey, I must admit that Summertime Sadness is constantly on repeat on my Ipod lately. Touched?! It would perhaps be wrong word, since I already have my own thematic choreography (Tacky, I know). Precisely, Miss Del Rey’s verse where she dramatically sings about the red dress and big hair inspired me on the lookout for perfect autumn red dresses.
From Italian brand Vivetta that has always been on the sweet side of fashion, are available two red beauties. Martedi dress with long sleeves and scalloped inserts and bustier Sofia in prom style, both equally feminine and elegant. Orla Kiely again pleased her fans with red beauty in her collection, which for Fall 2012 is strappy party dress made of very expensive and comfortable ottoman fabric. And we didn’t yet forget the short-sleeved beauty with bow on waist from Orla’s Resort collection. The well-fitted red dress is already a star per se, so I believe in minimalistic ways of embellishments. More than appropriate for sweet moments would be pair of Charlotte Olympia kitty flats. While for the times of decadence, I would pick Valentino ballerinas with studs from Fall Noir capsule collection. Very welcomed is big hair or chignon in 1960s style, of course. (Think of Pattie Boyd.) I would finish ensemble with small pieces of gold jewelry or contrast bag. (Think of Alexa Chung during Paris S/S 2012 Season in dress from Valentino Red with bows on the shoulders.) Now that we have the perfect red dress, all we need are dinner dates and lot of pretty invites. 

Call us little flirts, but that’s who we are.

To please never satisfied critics, brand’s clients and to maintain the vision of the brand that couture supports, all at the same time, it’s not an easy task at all. Considering that most of members of Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture are also creators of ready to wear, and some of the resort or capsule collections, it’s not an easy job to satisfy themselves, at the end. Dissatisfaction can be a very good drive, but everyone with creative job understands a complexness of creativity especially when deadlines and pressures are in the game. Week of Haute Couture that has always been fashion’s great carrousel of excitement brings also the great errand that your ride has to be the one that will create fireworks of thrill. The one that is familiar with creation of excite is Herr Karl, just like Mademoiselle Chanel in her time was. Lavish ensembles are usually spiced up with iconic models plus the model of the moment, which is currently Lindsey Wixson. Started with pretty seriousness, and all the functional ways of tweed, he spreads the word of immortality of classical Chanel. Unlike the others, he doesn’t have to search inspiration out there, when he has loads of it in his own garden. His remakes of classical Chanel pieces will never become boring. And he won’t ever be afraid to show them in modern way. Accessorized with 1940s snoods, scarves tied in pussy bow and sparkly hosiery, his clothes always have the story to tell. Different from they work they are doing for Valentino house last few seasons, were couture ideas of Chiuri and Piccoli that diminished previous age of innocence. Between aesthetic blue gowns they explored the history of Garavani’s work, but also went to time of brocade.  They filled our eyes also with lavish red and sparkly outfits that were extravagant in every detail, from velvet appliqués to fur inserts. Always interesting Alexis Mabille had a great affair with caftan and made all the shiny gowns for all magic workers and small creatures that unnoticeably surround us. With extravagance of couture, somehow you start to believe that there’s a thin line between beauty and ugliness. So is it hard to create feelings of excitement in little children of fashion again and again? Certainly it is. And with all the complexity of cultural and social changes in creating of a mode today, it takes more than just clothes to experience that fervent and obsessive side of fashion show.

Lyell, Emma and Tocca

I was the one of those girls that had broken heart last year when I heard the news that New York City’s label Lyell is saying goodbye. Emma Fletcher, designer left very emotive note on her website for all her fans. I was the one that was also touched by her words and amazed with her passion. Although I’ve never stepped in Lyell’s boutique in New York’s Nolita nor I don’t know Emma Fletcher in personal, this news made me sad. At that time in my life I was thinking more about the ethics of a fashion, market and a consumer behavior so after the news that Lyell is shutting down with huge discount I was making presumptions of what happened to label. Is it because of the fast fashion and ability that you can buy very similar blouse for three times less money that’s created by a child? Or Emma wanted to close the chapter of success that label achieved? Or Emma couldn’t fit in the character of today’s designer that’s creating in sly manner. Why slyly? Because many of those that are making our clothes have to believe that we cannot have in the closet that we really need. Your pants are not exactly what you want but you going to buy them, and another year you would buy yourself another pair. Ordinary consumer could not believe how much of psychology is behind his pants. That’s how it goes in fashion, this is not the fairest world and fashion is part of that world. So what Emma Fletcher did differently? What kind of fashion is the fashion that Lyell used to offer? Unquestionably, that wasn’t fashion based on a trend. Forget about that. Patterns were very classical and feminine, details were smart, and collections were similar. Lyell girl was the girl that possessed sensuality of 1930s, frisky vibe of roaring twenties and was enough special to get a role in French 1960s movie. All that means that from Lyell you could get something that you will wear and could wear in a different ways. To go back on example of the pants that means you need just two pair of pants and you won’t buy eight other pairs if these are perfect. In the term of what fashion means today, could we even call that fashion? I don’t know and I am not very smart nor educated to declare that. But what I know is that Emma Fletcher did something beautiful and very personal. That was a kind of clothes that you would make if you were designing for yourself; not boring but what you need. So I believe that Emma Fletcher is designer in the true sense of the word. She knew exactly what girl needs and in the world of phonies that’s not a very usual case. One more thing that makes Emma not so ordinary designer is the fact that she doesn’t sketch or sew (interview in W mag). Seems that you don’t need the “old-school” for the “what’s good or not” feeling.

After all of this scribbles of mine, you are familiar with my connection with Lyell, so you understand how surprised I was when I heard recently that Emma teamed up with beauty brand Tocca to create their ready to wear line (Tocca had a popular RTW line back in the 90s). For the first collection this autumn Emma did a great job. Like in the case of the Lyell, there are plenty of lovely basics that can be romantic or sophisticated. Or both. Again Emma Fletcher paid attention to every detail so lace is imported from France, and wool for coats is from Italy and England. And every blouse is made in silk. So if social means that you have to pick the groups that determine you as a persona I can say I belong to the nostalgic Lyell group that is happy that Emma Fletcher is back.

Dear Miss Autumn,

I wanted to say to you that I am so pleased that you are here. I enjoy sound of your showers and whispers of your leaves that fall. However I wanted to tell you that I think I need a coat. Not that I am desperate and ungrateful because I have lot of coats, but I need a proper one because I am grown up now. On the other hand, few days ago I was watching a TV show and I saw a lots of kids that don’t have autumn clothes. This made me sad. Okay, maybe I am also poor now, but I have lots of clothes. And do I need gray jacket that I wear for running? I don’t run, so I believe I don’t.

Because of this dear Miss autumn I will give all my clothes that I don’t wear anymore to those that need the same, and you can help me to find a job so I can buy this pretty Orla Kiely’s coat.

Chic details; pullover, Alice band and compass

Moved on from 80’s suburban housewife that wears pullover on jeans to shop in the supermarket, Givenchy with this purple mohair  pullover embellished with floral wreath had approached to the college kid that reads lot of classics, plays an instrument (piano) and is nature lover. Real star of this season. Bit oversized, pullover makes silhouette casual and is really perfect partner for autumn winter season; combined with skirts and jeans or over the dresses and blouses with interesting details on collar. Little plastic Alice band is underestimated lately as more we prank ourselves with feathers, flowers or bows. Stylist Bay Garnett showed in editorial Autumn Sonata for Vogue UK full beauty of it. And if rural stands for unsophisticated in this story becomes fully sophisticated. Simple as it is. As a quirky detail for embellishment in these windy times, I would choose compass. This one from the photo is part of The Seafarer collection from Australian jewelry label One Luv, which pays tribute to adventurous Treasure Island (Robert Louis Stevenson).

Beauty of Autumn

Maybe it’s in the smell of fresh made coffee in early morning while you are staring at the city’s gentle awakening. During those early times fog spreads the veil that gently hugs sleepy buildings, and old street lamps are whispering last lullaby before that cars start their own charade. As I open my window, fresh air rushes to get inside and with the scent of the room intertwines in invisible shadow that serenely spins all around. I stand like a statue in the room, with cigarette burning between my fingers and closed eyes. I allow those waves of air to weave the web around me and they make tick-tocks from the clock calm until they finally become without sound. When the little friend from the wall impatiently says it‘s the time, I will hear Mr. Baker from a stereo telling he falls in love terribly hard. After I take a bath, I come back sneakily to meet my closet that said farewell to summer’s wear and while Ruth will miss her darling when autumn leaves start to fall, in my head I create my ode to the beauty of the fall.

Is it just because that the gingham will be replaced with the tweed, reason why autumn is so hopelessly beautiful? Or it’s because the lace will reach full romance in combination with knits. Can you find the autumn in a sound that your Mary Jane’s make while they find their way through the autumn leaves. Is maybe antique market covered in gold, secret way to lost times. Or it’s the cheery wind that makes fun with you and blows your hat to the ground. Or ribbon from your hair trapped in the collar of your coat. Or it’s the beauty in the afternoon sun that tries hard to peep from behind of cloud and give shine to tress and the grass in the countryside. Maybe it’s the evening that time when you can fell that air filled with something I cannot describe, or it’s morning, I don’t know. But it gives me a thought what if it’s there just one life of this kind and maybe you and I might not smell again the beauties of everything that this kind of common surround creates. What else girl can do than to enjoy that gloomy but extremely sweet vibe?

Paris fashion week fall 2011

Chloé bows

Hannah MacGibbon continues to follow her sense for design and style of beloved Chloé, but from time to time she tries to awake classic Chloé woman to experiment more with bit eccentric pieces. So this time she did that with snakeskin. So after the Sally bag it was about the time to add a little of dressy snake to the dress, even if moments that typical Chloé girl would love are casual leather coat in A cut, luxurious but elegant chiffon and all the pants, blouses and bows. This time even on shoes. Bravo Hannah!
Cacharel nude and eclectic blues
Cacharel super aesthetic sixties shape in nude, neutral tones matched perfectly with eclectic blue eye shadow on Cédric Charlier’s models. Super floral prints of Cacharel showed once again that what is Liberty to UK, Cacharel is to France.
Nina’s Lolita
Peter Copping had to cope with Theyskens heritage left at Ricci. I mean all the princess letters from Upper East Side? I believe it’s hard, but Peter has enough experience, talent and knowledge to fit in. Once again he proved that. In middle of dark tones, he breaks the monotony with super polished Lolita that adores suit and all the classy things in fragile colors. After that he brings back the serious romance with items like lavish velvet coat! Hopelessly romantic!
Dries Divine
When you see all those dresses, prints, textures, shoes, pants and glasses, you start to feel something towards Dries Van Noten himself. And I believe I am not the only one.
Givenchy details
Bejeweled flowers, violets, panthers, Bettie Page, 90s Versace inspired chains. Everything together! So you come to idea that is wrong to think that everyone has talent for everything. To make a wearable collection and to keep your artistic nature you have to have a talent. And Riccardo Tisci possesses enormous one. He makes me to pull the pencil skirt out of my closet and wear it all fall long.

That is confirmed not only by rise of sale but the fact the Miu Miu became one of the most copied brands among mass-market retailers. Sister label of Prada that is from its beginnings all about bright colors, prints, details, playful and girly character, for the last few seasons is increasing its audience. Does that mean that we become happier? Or we need that dose of happiness in rough times like these?

London fashion week fall 2011; highlights

1. Oh Orla
Lovely tunic dresses, knitted cardigans, coats with buttons, new bags on chain; I want every single item from Orla Kiely’s fall presentation. In fact when I don't?
2. Alice Temperley starry starry night moment
Temperley London fall runaway was like a royal ballroom. Elegant silhouette, details, lace and silk showed the luxury of modern princess’s closet. Not to mention those white and black sheer dresses with shiny stars appliqués. Did you always want to be wrapped up in a stars?
3. Michael van der Ham shiny velvet
Designer showed complete luxury of velvet in bright colors and shiny fabric. So the wintertime according to designer will be warm but not dull.
4. Mary Katrantzou print moment
Colors, florals and prints so beautiful that for a moment it seems you are trapped in some other kaleidoscope world. We’ve never seen Faberge eggs yet on the runaway; And than came Mary!





5. Richard Nicoll art deco inspired shoes
Richard Nicoll showed the true beauty of aesthetic. Subtle colors, the perfect tone of mustard, lovely nudes, one adorable parka in nude and shoes to die for. And yes, the perfect combination of sheer fabrics and leather?
